Numerous car firms had fascinating beginnings and Porsche is no different. Porsche had been founded by Ferdinand Porsche, who had been a vital person for the German unified armed forces called the Wehrmacht. He performed a crucial role with building racing cars, tanks and airplanes. He created more than a thousand patents as an auto engineer and was the chief engineer for Mercedez-Benz throughout the 1920′s. Porsche later on setup his personal engineering workshop and created the Volkswagen. He appeared to be chief of operations at the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg and was interned there by the Allies toward the end of World War II.

A few years after he was released, Ferdinand Porsche and his son, Ferry, started building the Porsche 356. The particular sports car was built with a rear-mounted, four-cylinder boxer engine that was much like the Volkswagen. The top speed of the Porsche 356 was only 87 mph. While it was not a speed demon, the car possessed a very classy and innovative design as a convertible and, later, as a hard top. The Porsche 356 was put together at a workshop that was owned by a master of streamlined auto production named Erwin Komenda. Komenda worked along side with Porsche at Volkswagen and was a key person for design techniques and sheet metal.

Komenda was critical in creating a new style of closed coupe, called the fastback, which is still prominent in today’s luxury sports cars. In conjunction with Porsche’s grandson, Komenda moved forward using fastback design by creating the Porsche 911. The 911 became a spectacular sports car having frog eye headlights, straight waistline, a sloping bonnet and curves running from the windscreen to the rear bumper. Even though the style was comparable to the first Porsche, technically, it turned out more like the BMW 1500. As the style was a bit questionable, the 911 had become the symbol of what Porsche was all about.

Porsche the business nearly fell apart throughout the 70′s and 80′s when designers at that time tried to move too far off from Porsche’s classic designs. Samples of their bad attempt to escape from the past were the 928 and 924 which were co-developed with Volkswagen. But in the 1990′s, the company realized that the classic designs were timeless and that resulted in a resurgence to profitability. Further developments of the long-running 911 now were being worked on by almost forty people in the design department. The 911 GTI, which is a powerful combination of racing car and sports car, was one of the new developments put forward by Anthony R Hatter, the in-house designer.
